Using clay and organic processes to reconnect with her Indigenous ancestry, Orjuela addresses assimilation and erasure while simultaneously exploring current issues like climate change and mental health. Her sculptures delve into themes of renewal, rebirth, and the duality of energies. Double-headed snakes and birds embody ancestral wisdom, while reptilian motifs symbolize adaptability and regeneration. The jaguar, a recurring figure in her practice, signifies mental strength, power, and a divine connection. Living in Kinngait on the southern tip of Baffin Island, Shuvinai Ashoona (b. 1961) is part of Canada’s Inuit culture. Far from dystopian, Shuvinai’s brightly coloured drawings teem with life; and while her community occasionally clashes with the artist’s creatures, they usually coexist peacefully. Her art has been featured in the official curated section of the 2022 Venice Biennial “The Milk of Dreams”. She was awarded a special mention by the jury. Allie Gattor (b. 1994) is a self-taught artist based in Montreal. Her work can be surprising due to its combination of cheeky feminism and dark humor. Kimberly Orjuela (b. 1998) channels her creative energy into the exploration of her Colombian cultural and spiritual roots through the medium of ceramics. The contemporary field of ceramics often relies on industrially manufactured materials, which are sourced from long distances, and produce great impacts on the environment. This project was conceived as a way to learn the processes involved in harvesting local materials to be used as clay bodies, surface treatments, and glazes.
