Kimberly Orjuela explores, through her exhibition Futur.e.s ancêtres, the links between ancestral memory, ecological balance and collective well-being. Inspired by precolombian cosmology and her experience as a latina woman residing in Canada, the artist creates ceramic and fabric sculptures that reinterprets traditional symbols through a contemporary point of view.
 
Between art and cultural research, Kimberly Orjuela's practice questions the durable effects of colonial stories and the deleterious consequences they generated in our relation to the living. Taking inspiration from indigenous knowledge, traditional ceramic techniques and post-colonial mindset, Kimberly Orjuela talks about current matters like mental health, climate change and interdependence dynamics between humans and their environment. The presented artworks act as protective figures and witnesses of our time. Many sculptures include references to the landscape - drops of water, volcanic textures or vegetal patterns - to evoke pollution, climate pressure and the resilience of natural systems. Recurrent symbols, like snakes and birds, recall the transformation and renewal cycles. 

With Futur.e.s ancêtres, Kimberly Orjuela encourages the public to think about our collective heritage and the role we wish to play as future ancestors.

Fondation GranthamCurators: Josianne Poirier and Julie Bélisle&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;
May 2nd to July 26th 2026Designed in two parts, the exhibition first brings together works by Maude Arès, Hannah Claus, Frédéric Lavoie, Angela Marsh, and Kimberly Orjuela at the Grantham Foundation, from May 2 to July 26, 2026. The second part, presented at the Biosphere from September 5, 2026, to May 2, 2027, will feature artists Geneviève Chevalier, Jim Holyoak.
Co-presented by the Grantham Foundation and the Biosphère &#124; Espace pour la vie, A World in Common showcases the work of 10 artists and is presented at two venues: the Biosphère in Montreal and the Grantham Foundation in Saint-Edmond-de-Grantham. The exhibition is curated by Julie Bélisle and Josianne Poirier.By adopting the perspective of the owl, the field mouse, or even the dandelion, the works gathered in this exhibition shift our perspective. They encourage us to consider how the land welcomes us and how we share it with other species, inviting us to commit to a pluralistic, supportive, and deeply relational world. Through acts of care, collaborative approaches to creation, and attention to interspecies ethics, these works offer a broad understanding of the notion of hospitality and encourage us to rethink our ways of “inhabiting.” Together, they explore the possibility of “a world in common” where all living beings can flourish.

Participating artists:&#38;nbsp;Japheth Asiedu-Kwarteng, Astrid Guerrero, Tomo Ingalls, Sepideh Kalani, Varuni Kanagasundaram, Kim Le, Kimberly Orjuela, Ross Junior Owusu, Vanna Ramirez, Amber Pierce, Danyang Song, Mohamad Soudy, Garima Tripathi, Bianca Turner

Everyone’s story matters, and to tell it through the material of clay leaves us, the viewer, with the imprint of the artist’s vulnerability, power, and voice. It was an honor to sit with these stories and learn so much from every applicant who bravely created and shared. The fourteen artists in the Multicultural Fellowship Exhibition represent a small part of the worldly and culturally expansive clay cannon. The NCECA fellowship and exhibition that runs concurrently with its annual conference is a vital testament and continued necessity to clay and its communities.

The selected works unravel a range of personal narratives from silenced and forgotten histories, reclamation of the personhood of the historically suppressed, and the passing down of familial stories, and they examine the current state of politics with the layers of joy, absurdity, wit, and humor. I was deeply affected by how their narratives were explored through the variety of forms like overly adorned vessels, figurative works, and abstracted forms, and the investigations with materials and techniques explored through video and wall work. Their works become important reflections of representation, what stories we tell, and the world we want to see.&#38;nbsp;I hope these artists and their works resonate with you and that you continue sharing their works with your communities.

Exhibition documentary available hereOur Minds Create Our Reality is a series of ceramic sculptures highlighting the inseparable link between personal well-being and the health of our planet. Drawing from pre-Columbian traditions, the works address contemporary issues such as climate change and mental health.


My personal experience with mental health, shaped by life in a capitalist, post-colonial society, deeply influences this series. The sculptures emphasize how our mental state is closely tied to the environment. When we care for ourselves and our communities, we foster a healthier relationship with the Earth. Conversely, disconnection from nature results in suffering for both individuals and the planet.


Inspired by Indigenous Colombian beliefs that ancient ceramics served as symbols of balance, the pieces encourage reflection on our interconnectedness with nature. They suggest that just as inner discord can manifest externally, healing ourselves can contribute to restoring environmental harmony. Ultimately, this exhibition seeks to inspire personal transformation, showing that by nurturing ourselves, we contribute to the collective goal of building a more harmonious world.

Solo Exhibition

January 16 to February 22, 2025
Telling stories through figurative terracotta sculptures inspired by pre-Columbian traditions, Kimberly Orjuela’s characters and idols reference the past while reflecting her position as a Latinx woman growing up in Canada. Using clay and organic processes to reconnect with her Indigenous ancestry, Orjuela addresses assimilation and erasure while simultaneously exploring current issues like climate change and mental health.

Her sculptures delve into themes of renewal, rebirth, and the duality of energies. Double-headed snakes and birds embody ancestral wisdom, while reptilian motifs symbolize adaptability and regeneration. The jaguar, a recurring figure in her practice, signifies mental strength, power, and a divine connection. Researching pre-Columbian art and delving in post-colonial theory, Orjuela’s work is a testament to her heritage and embodies a commitment to honouring the earth.

Sep 6th- Nov 3rd 2024Eternal Tales is an exhibition that delves into myths and legends inspired by the artistic traditions of pre-Columbian history. The characters, figures, and idols created are references to indigenous stories from Colombia, interpreted through the artist’s unique lens.

The past provides insights for the future, and Kimberly's work bridges these two timelines. Her imaginative creations of animals and figures envision a simultaneous meeting of the past and present in our contemporary realm, exploring current issues.

Galerie Hugues Charbonneau highlighed the art of three women artists in its booth at the 2024 Outsider Art Fair. Living in Kinngait on the southern tip of Baffin Island, Shuvinai Ashoona (b. 1961) is part of Canada’s Inuit culture. Far from dystopian, Shuvinai’s brightly coloured drawings teem with life; and while her community occasionally clashes with the artist’s creatures, they usually coexist peacefully. Her art has been featured in the official curated section of the 2022 Venice Biennial “The Milk of Dreams”. She was awarded a special mention by the jury. Allie Gattor (b. 1994) is a self-taught artist based in Montreal. Her work can be surprising due to its combination of cheeky feminism and dark humor. Kimberly Orjuela (b. 1998) channels her creative energy into the exploration of her Colombian cultural and spiritual roots through the medium of ceramics. For her, the act of artmaking is a testament to her commitment to honor the earth.
